World Cup Ends for England
Sigh! I have been rooting for England to win the World Cup 2006 but it was not to be. Yes, I know this post came 2 days late - that’s because I’m down right frustrated by England’s departure from the World Cup.
The match between England and Portugal which went into penalties saw England’s dismay performance in taking penalties and not converting them into much needed goals. Highlight of the match:
- Wayne Rooney was red carded for stomping on Ricardo Carvalho’s family jewels. During the scuffle for the ball, I saw the incident as an accident. Rooney never meant to stomp on Carvalho’s balls.
- Immediate after the stomping event, Cristiano Ronaldo ran towards the referree in a bid to get Rooney red carded (Rooney gave a light push at Ronaldo). That unsportsman-like attitude towards his very own Manchester United teammate is deplorable. Call it national patrotism and what nots but I really hate to see Ronaldo playing for Manchester United now.
- The referee could have very well yellow carded Rooney but no - he had to give a red card. Come on, it was just a small push that event infants do it to their siblings.
Now that the World Cup has also ended for me, I conclude that it was a good fight for England with only 10 men in the field against Portugal’s eleven. I look forward to supporting England again in Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010. In the meantime, I hope France will trash Portugal in the semi finals.
