How to Integrate SimpleViewer with WordPress

The moment I laid eyes on SimpleViewer, I fell in love with it. I told myself that I really need to integrate SimpleViewer with this blog. It has come to my understanding that there are some challenges to it. This is the recipe to integrate WordPress and [tag]SimpleViewer[/tag].

Ingredients (what I used here):
[1] WordPress 2.0
[2] SimpleViewer 1.7
[3] Kimili Flash Embed Plugin

Laying the Foundation:
[1] Download Kimili Flash Embed Plugin
[2] Extract the zipped file and locate the file called “kml_flashembed.php
[3] Upload the “kml_flashembed.php” file to your WordPress folder “wp-content/plugins/
[4] Activate the [tag]Kimili Flash Embed[/tag] plugin by clicking on the “Activate” word.

Activate WordPress

Prepare SimpleViewer:
It is assumed that you have some knowledge about using SimpleViewer. If not, click here.
For this example, I have set my SimpleViewer images to public_html/gallery/paris/ folder.

[1] Update SimpleViewer’s imageData.xml file with the relevant information (sample in the image below). Note that I changed the bgcolor, navPosition, title, imagePath and thumbPath attributes from the default settings. Note also that I included the full domain path for imagePath and thumbPath attributes.
SimpleViewer

[2] Upload the entire SimpleViewer (including images and thumbnails) to public_html/gallery/paris/ folder.

Final Steps:
[1] Create a page in WordPress giving any title that you desire
[2] Enter these codes to display SimpleViewer (refer image below). Note that I included the full domain path for the movie and xmlDataPath attributes.
Wordpress Page
[3] Time to test and voila! Done!

Click here to see the example of my Paris Gallery in action. Comments and/or questions are greatly appreciated.

Quick Update:
I was really having trouble with my Scotland gallery. I checked, double checked, triple checked but my Scottish images simply would not display. Finally, I found the problem. It seems that the path may be too long.Originally, I was using http://www.amoswong.com/gallery/scotland/ as my path (that failed). When I shortened the path to http://www.amoswong.com/gallery/scot/, it worked!![tags]Kimili[/tags]

    Hi,

Been trying to follow your example regarding simpleviewer, but it doesn’t seem to work within the WP pages (click on gallery on my site). But if you go to http://www.eyalassaf.com/gallery , then it does work.

    any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Hi Eyal,
Thanks for stopping by and my compliments to your beautiful pictures.

First off, I assume that you are referring to this page
    http://eyalassaf.com/index.php/?page_id=25

2 things you need to check:
    1. maintain the “www” prefix for all your URL
    2. make sure the kml_flashembed tag is typed in full and no carriage return in between.

  5. Eyal said,

    April 26, 2006 @ 9:05 am

    Hi Amos,

Did all that, but still, I keep on getting a blue screen on my gallery page, and now, for some reason, when I go to http://www.eyalassaf.com/gallery , only the thumbnails show up.

    Weird!

    Any more ideas?

    Cheers.

    Eyal,
I’ve just checked your page. You are missing the xmlDataPath attribute.
    Re-check your codes. 🙂

  7. Eyal said,

    April 26, 2006 @ 10:30 am

I’ve checked and rechecked, and for the life of me, I can’t find what’s wrong. I manually entered the imageData.xml paths and also in the buildgallery.php.

my code on the page itself is:

There are no breaks in the code.

On which page did you notice the missing xmlDataPath attributes?
Also, why are the thumbnails showing, but that’s it…no images?

I’m sorry to bother you with all of this.

    Thank you for your time.

Amos: Thanks for getting back to me, Eyal. To the reader, Eyal has solved the problem by eliminating the spacing between fvars=”xmlDataPath

    Hi Amos,

Although your explanation is very deep and detailed, I haven’t been able to install it successfully.

    I have followed your instructions:

    1) I’ve installed KFE 1.1. But my service provider has not allowed me to upload “.DS_Store”. Is this necessary to upload?
    2) I have activated the plug-in.
    3) I have modified the XML file. Here it is: http://rady.adminheaven.hu/gallery/imageData.xml
    4) Then I have created a page in wordpress
http://rady.adminheaven.hu/ The page name is: Teszt. And it is still not working.
    5) The script, which was created, is the following:

I have no idea what could be the mistake, what is wrong
Could you be so kind to help me in this topic? I know that everybody has limited time.

I give you my id, and my pass to my wordpress site, if this is a help to you.

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Best regards,

    Gabor

    P.S.: I use IE 6.01

Amos: Gabor, I’ve edited out your URL, admin id and password. Since this comment is in public view, it’s dangerous to do that.

  10. amos said,

    May 8, 2006 @ 5:48 pm

    Hi Gabor,
[1] I’m not sure if the .DS_Store file is required or not but I doubt it. .DS_Store file is used to holds the information which controls the way a folder will be opened in Mac OS.

[2] Is there way to shorten your XMLDataPath? It looks very long and as I’ve said in my post, it causes a problem. Shorten it and try again. Maybe http://rady.adminheaven.hu/g/imageData/xml ?

  11. Bartek said,

Hey dude, thanks for the great tutorial! I almost got it working after shortening the path lengths, but I’m getting some really strange things now…

At first it displayed the thumbnail borders and “Example Text”, but not the pictures (I only have the one default picture in there right now). But when I changed the “Example Text” in the xml file, the swf didn’t update it!?!

And now, I’m not getting anything at all!? What the heck?
Here’s what my code looks like:

    Can you help?

    Thank you,

When I viewed that page, I’m getting the following caption

BTW, nice site you’ve got there. 🙂

    Hi sw,
Thanks for the update on that page. However, I can seem to find the flashObject.addVariable code in your blog’s source.

It is apparent to me that you are using WordPress 2.0.3 which may have a compatability issue with Kimili plugin as reported by luca earlier.

Let me check around and see what I can come up with. Stay tuned. 🙂

  20. amos said,

    July 27, 2006 @ 8:07 pm

I’ve done some investigation and snooping around and I successfully tested on WordPress 2.0.3

What I found was that SimpleViewer has now upgraded to version 1.7.1 which may be the cause of the problem. Here’s the recipe that I use:
    1. WordPress 2.0.3
    2. Kimili Flash Embed 1.1
    3. SimpleViewer 1.7

Note that the SimpleViewer version is a lower than what is currently available.
I need someone to test the above and let me know if you got it successful.
Here’s the link to the older version of SimpleViewer 1.7:

    Hi Amos,
Just wanted to let you know that I successfuly implemented simpleviewer 1.7.1 on a wordpress 2.0.3 installation using your instructions AND really long URLs, so it can be done (believe me, if I can do it anyone can)!!

The URL is here if you want to take a look:
    http://74.52.56.66/~firefly/event-gallery/

That is just a place-holder until we switch the DNS, at which point the URL will change to:
    http://www.fireflyeventdesign.com/event-gallery/

Thanks for taking the time to write this guide.

I assume that your xmlDataPath is still set to http://www.parameters.cc/frei/imageData.xml and your images folder is http://parameters.cc/frei/images/ (as per your XML settings).

However, when I tried to access the images folder, I hit an error 403 Forbidden.
You may want to check on the permission issue first and try again.

    Hi

Thank you very much for this great tutorial. Unfortunatly, it didn’t work for me.

But I manage to do it using few tricks.
1/ the hard trick that took me several hours to figure out : an xml file called crossdomain.xml was missing at the root of my website. This file is crucial in order to have it working : it allow the browser flash player to access any part of your website.
Google crossdomain.xml to learn how to make it (it’s just few ligns in a text file).
Without it, you will have the simpleviewer working but no images showing up.

2/ for some unknown reasons, even with triple checked paths, I had to move some folders (image and thumbs) one level up in my ftp. Why? I have no idea.

I hope this will help some of your readers.
    Thank you.

Hi, here’s the IFRAME code I mentioned. You just have to have a whole SV gallery somewhere online and reference the index.html page in a post or page on Word Press with the following code. Of course you can customize the dimensions and you have to set up the SV gallery to orient the SWF in the upper lefthand corner of the page:

Here is my example on my mom’s quilting blog: http://freestylequilting.com/?page_id=12

I’m not sure what’s up with the length of the gallery name…but I spent probably 4 hours trying to get this sucker to work! I did everything to a T. Then, I remembered reading your comment about the length of the gallery name. As a last ditch effort, I shortened the gallery name from /vickersfavs to /vick and it worked! I wonder what the limitations are on naming your galleries. I certainly wish we could peg this. Thanks for the great tutorial! Here’s the post where I’ve successfully managed to integrate Simpleviewer into a WP post: http://kurtdamron.com/blog/?p=339

P.S. Artimbo’s code is still missing…I tried to implement the IFRAME version, but its just too difficult. The formatting is wonky. Your version using KFE is much easier!

OK. Sorry for so many comments. But this is getting frustrating. It was finally working great. I didn’t change a thing, now all of a sudden, its back to not working. Arrrgh!

This will work on the newest version of WordPress, plugin and simple viewer. The problem with all the code examples is they use the wrong type of quote marks. As soon as you use a straight double quote mark it works fine. So type in your code and check your spelling is the biggest hurdle.

    Cheers~

(this took me 4 hours to figure out)

Sa for those of us that use SV 1.8 we would mod. the gallarey.xml and not the imgdata.xml!? Any ideas on intergreating the SVAdmin at some stage?
    Nice work..

Here’s the IFRAME code, sorry for the delay:

This just references an HTML page containing a SV gallery. I don’t know if this is the kind of solution you all are looking for, but it does actually work:

    the url is at http://www.fifthmay.com/gallery/wedding

    @artimbo,
Thanks for the IFRAME code. 🙂

    @isaac,
Your page seems to be missing the “xmlDataPath” parameter.

    Hello,

    I’ about to get mad.
    Using WP 2.2 , Kimili 1.3.1, SimpleViewer 1.8

    SimpleViewer as standalone works fine:
    http://galerie.derraum.com/wp-content/ero/

Flash embedded with Kimili the same:
    http://galerie.derraum.com/category/schlitten/

Only the SimpleViewer embedded via Kimili won’t work:
    http://galerie.derraum.com/erotomaniacs-2/

her is the code I’m using:

the sourcecode of the html-page delivered by wordpress shows a blank field in the “content-area” which I find interesting. but I have no idea whats going on here.

maybe a conflict beetween the swfobject.js in the simpleviewer-folder and the same named file in the Kimili-plugIn folder??

    thanks
    Stefan

Hey, I have now released a plugin to incoorperate Simpleviewer into WordPress. Let it out and let me know if you like it: http://wp-simpleviewer.fuggi82.de/

Together with a reader, we’ve just completed a trial using the IFRAME method as mentioned by artimbo. It’s simple to do and looks great on WordPress.

If you’re facing problems with integrating SimpleViewer with WordPress using the Kimili plugin, give me a buzz (contact details can be found in the About Amos Wong section) and we’ll get right down to it. 🙂

I just wanted to put a post here to say thank you to Amos Wong who was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge in helping me get simpleviewer working on my photoblog. Nothing seemed to work, but he stuck with me and worked out solution – and was very kind and patient all the time.

So thank you Amos, from me and all the amateur but ambitious wordpress users like myself. ; )

    xx Jem

Thanks for posting this. I managed to get it working, but I was hoping to be able to set the size of the object with percentages. Unfortunately, the result is no flash appearing in my page due to the apparently extraneous insertion of extra doublequotes by Kimili Flash Embed.

I’m using a totally fresh install of WordPress 2.2, SimpleViewer 1.8 & Kimili 1.3 to test.

I was able to fix this problem (and hopefully not introduce any more) by removing the following lines (110&111) from kml_flashembed.php
    $atts[‘height’] = ($atts[‘height’]{strlen($atts[‘height’]) – 1} == “%”) ? ‘”‘ . $atts[‘height’] . ‘”‘ : $atts[‘height’];
    $atts[‘width’] = ($atts[‘width’]{strlen($atts[‘width’]) – 1} == “%”) ? ‘”‘ . $atts[‘width’] . ‘”‘ : $atts[‘width’];

I have tried to activate the Kimili flash to my website, but when I went to activate it, it showed fatal error. Can you help figure this out?

Hi Dru, can you let us know what the error is?

  81. Dru said,

    The error reads this:
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

The plugin shows up in the plugin management page, but will not allow me to activate it.

I tried to integrate it, no way, it doesn’t work. But when I integrate your gallery on my page it’s ok…

I think I did something wrong with the imageData.xml file. Could you send me yours per e-mail? Would be very nice 🙂

    Thanks!
