I have received a number of emails from webmasters asking me various directory-related questions such as if I have developed directories, whether these directories are making money and what directory scripts I use. Instead of replying individually through email, I have decided to put it down here in a blog post. The answer to the first question is easy - yes, I do own 2 directories at the money. One is a free travel related niche directory and the other is a paid directory. I had a general directory once but have since decided to sell it off because it is taking too much of my time.
Now, for the second question; this is a little tough. Yes, I am making money from my directories but not as much as I would like. Why, you ask. Well, for starters, it takes up a lot of my time reviewing sites and I hate it when I had to reject the listing fees of “spammy” sites.
How do I make money from directories, you asked. It is obvious that a paid directory will make its money from listing fees but for a free directory, there are other methods of monetizing, such as Google Adsense integration. If you ask my personal opinion, Google Adsense is probably not a good method of monetizing your directory as the click-through rate is low and generally yield low paying clicks. The best method from my experience is through text link ads (aff link).
How do I start a directory, you asked. First, get an appropriate domain name; forget about those funny unpronounceable domains and forget about setting up your directory on a subdomain if you are really serious about this venture. Next, get hold of a free directory script or if you prefer, go for a paid one. Make sure that the script you chose is a SEO-friendly directory script. Setup your directory and do your newly created directory a favour by putting a custom logo to differentiate your directory with the other thousands on the Internet. Start marketing your directory, review all submissions and approve quality submissions. Remember that submitters will not pay to list their website alongside spammy ones.
Directories are not a get-rich-quick method. You will need to put a lot of effort and love into your directory in order to create a branding and “authoritative” perception. Lots and lots of marketing efforts are required to build your directory and get ready to reinvest your money you earn from listing fees into advertisements. Lastly, you will need lots of patience and discipline to diligently review submissions.

Microsoft Malaysia recently held a sneak peek of Windows Vista, Exchange 2007 and Office 2007. I was very excited in the beginning to learn what Microsoft had to offer with its new operating system. However, having sat through half a day of looking at the offerings, there was not much to shout about.
Apart from the rotating cascading screens and dockable “widgets”, there were no drastic changes or offerings that I can see from Vista - or maybe I wasn’t concentrating enough; well, you can’t blame me for feeling bored from the presentations that was given.
During break time, I went over to the demo booths and tried out the Vista. First thing I did was to check the Task Manager and had a look at the memory consumption — the RAM usage stood at 600MB when idle!! I cannot imagine how much RAM I would need if I were to upgrade to Vista and Office 2007 in order to use my computer productively.
From what I can observe and experience, I suppose RAM is not going to be the only issue. You will need to consider hard drive speed, graphics card and processor power as well since Vista seem to be very “graphical”. In short, I don’t see myself upgrading to Windows Vista in the near future but I would definitely consider Office 2007 simply because PowerPoint 2007 has many nice graphical features that I am looking for (SmartArt is an example).

One of the major advantages of living in an apartment or condominium is not worrying about your roof (unless you stay at the top floor). There is no worry of water leakage or seepage; no worry of burglars climbing in through the roof; no worry that the tiles will come falling down while you are sleeping and especially no worry that the roof will be blown away in a thunderstorm. But if you do live in a house with roof, there are multiple common roof problems that can occur, such as bare spots, curling, clawing, buckling, flashing and broken shingles.
In any case, many of us wish to repair the problematic roof on our own but mind you, the roof is a very dangerous place to be. Accidents can happen anytime especially if you do not place your weight correctly. I would suggest that you get hold of roofing contractors who are experts in this area. It may cost a little bit more but your well being is much more valuable. If you do not know of any roofing contractors, you can contact other home improvement contractors who can hook you up with one.
If you are the adventurous kind, and prefer to repair your own roof, please take heed of basic roofing safety precautions such as wearing a harness attached to a fall-resistant device, wear rubber-soled shoes, avoid slippery roof and et cetera. This root safety document by Owens Corning may be of interest to you.
